Judging Process

The process follows GWSAA established system:

  1. Double blinded process
We completely hide both labels and bottles from the panel. Instead, servers present only glasses of samples to the judges.
  2. Descriptors
Score sheets list short descriptors of each beer’s category and style to guide the judges’ assessments. The judges evaluate each sample based on how closely it matches the characteristics of its stated style.
  3. Scoring
Judges award an overall score from 0 to 100 to each sample. They calculate this final score by evaluating aroma, appearance, flavor, mouthfeel, and overall impression.

Awards

  • The Best of Class: TROPHY
Samples with the highest mark in their respective categories are awarded trophies, unless the difference between the highest and the next highest mark is less than one point, in which case, related samples are re-tasted by the panel chair for trophies.
  • 90 or above: GOLD
Outstanding example; the benchmark of the style. Equivalent to “Outstanding” level of Beer Judge Certificate Program (BJCP).
  • 85 or above: SILVER
Fine example, excellent quality without flaws. It is between “Excellent” and “Outstanding” levels of BJCP.
  • 75 or above: BRONZE
Good example, well above average and without flaws. It reaches the “Excellent” level of BJCP.
  • Below 75:
From minor flaws to problematic, samples are not eligible for medals in GWSAA.
